JOB PURPOSE

A successful candidate will contribute to developing, implementing, benchmarking, and rolling out robust and reproducible NGS-based assays across the company for programs in R&D, Technology Sciences, CMC and manufacturing as part of a broader team of Analytical Genomics scientists. This bench scientist should be passionate about adapting existing methods and developing cutting edge methods to solve exciting and challenging problems in cell and gene therapy and contribute to Sana's pipeline. This person should be a team player and fantastic at cross-functional communication.

The ideal candidate should have a technical background in genomics including single cell sequencing and/or NGS library prep, nucleic acids extraction, general molecular biology techniques, and direct experience operating sequencers. This includes understanding the underlying concept of the technique or method. This candidate should be able to partner effectively with the Bioinformatics/Computational Biology teams to analyze NGS data and help cross-functional teams interpret results. The ability to work in a highly collaborative environment and an agile team first mind-set will be critical to success.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop, implement and optimize NGS-based methods with appropriate experimental controls under manager supervision. This includes optimization and modification of existing kits and protocols, and troubleshooting issues that arise with assay development
  • Demonstrate PoC of method/assay through literature and/or benchmark data with appropriate controls and test samples
  • Work independently to execute on NGS protocols, standard molecular biology and biochemistry techniques, and tissue culture work (as necessary)
  • Preparation of NGS libraries and operation of NGS sequencers on a regular basis
  • Develop under manager supervision well defined QC metrics for each assay with go/no-go decision points to reduce time and cost associated with sequencing
  • Write up experimental results in an electronic lab notebook, maintain good lab notebook procedures, and ensure data and reports are properly stored in LIMS
  • Collaborate with the Computational Biology team to analyze data and automate analysis workflows
  • Help in the operation and maintenance of the Analytical Genomics lab and equipment
  • Document protocols in a traceable and detail-oriented manner that can be rolled-out across the company
  • Present results on a regular basis at the Analytical Genomics and Technology Sciences group meetings
  • Communicate to a broad audience with a range of technical, analytical, and biological expertise

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications, Experience & Education
  • PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, biomedical engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 4 years of hands-on laboratory experience with generating NGS libraries, nucleic acids quantification (e.g. Bioanalyzer, qPCR), and NGS sequencers,
  • Experience with troubleshooting technical issues with sample extractions and library preparations
  • Prior experience with NGS methods and assay development in an industry or academic setting
  • Experience with various cell isolation (e.g. FACS) and tissue dissociation techniques, tissue and cell culture, and general molecular biology techniques (e.g. qRT-PCR, Western blot)
  • Demonstrated success in working cross functionally especially with Bioinformatics teams
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences and attention to detail
  • Ability to handle several fast-paced projects concurrently

Preferred Qualifications & Education
  • Experience with single cell library prep protocols (e.g. 10x, SMART-Seq, Drop-Seq) a strong plus
  • Background in immunology and/or cell biology
  • Experience working with RNA or virus

Company

We believe we are entering a new era of medicine.  The ability to modify genes and use cells as medicines provides new tools to meaningfully change the outcome of many human diseases.

Early pioneers have made good progress, but most of what we can deliver for patients remains in front of us.

Sana was founded with the long view – bringing together great people and the best technologies to deliver on the challenging promise of engineered cells as medicines.

Three aspirations drive Sana as we look to treat patients with poor outcomes or currently untreatable diseases.
