The Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics and the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering at the University of Southampton invite applications for an Associate Professor/Lecturer (Assistant Professor*) in the area of future mobility systems, autonomous systems and robotics. We are specifically interested in candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
  • Dynamics and control of autonomous systems in manufacturing and mobility (including flight dynamics and vehicle dynamics)
  • Human-machine interactions and control
  • Hybrid and electric vehicles
  • Electric power systems for vehicles
  • Mechatronics including avionics and sensors for single and swarms of autonomous systems
  • Data science for design and operations of future mobility and manufacturing systems

You will join very active departments with inter-disciplinary research interests where fundamental and industrially relevant problems are addressed with a range of theoretical, experimental and computational methods. The Departments are within the School of Engineering where complementary work in aerodynamics and propulsion, battery technologies, unmanned aerial and underwater vehicles, computational engineering and design, mechatronics, biomedical engineering, materials science and additive manufacturing are carried out. The School has recently made major investments in new experimental facilities across different departments in experimental aerodynamics, propulsion, structural mechanics and additive manufacturing. The University also hosts one of the most powerful supercomputers in the UK.

To be successful you will have an academic reputation, demonstrated by high-quality journal publications in your field as you will be committed to developing, largely through external funding, a research team in your area. In education, it goes without saying that you will develop and deliver a range of innovative teaching and assessment approaches in different areas of Aeronautics and Astronautics and/or Mechanical Engineering continually enhancing the student experience. You will support us in developing our range of modules and project work and to widen our teaching activities in your area of interest. In Mechanical Engineering we are particularly looking for educational developments in the future of automotive engineering. It is essential you have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Engineering or related subject.

All applicants must include a Curriculum Vitae, a research statement, which includes research vision and grant capture over the next five years (up to 3 pages) and a teaching statement (up to 1 page) highlighting the areas of interest.
