The Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Southampton invites applications for the position of Associate Professor/ Lecturer (Assistant Professor*) level in the area of in data-driven aerospace engineering. Some research areas that would complement our existing strengths are:
  • Data-driven design tools for aircraft, rotorcraft and spacecraft systems including turbomachinery
  • Machine learning for classification and prediction of aircraft, rotorcraft and spacecraft systems
  • Uncertainty quantification and development of predictive models for high-value design


We would also welcome applications from candidates with expertise in any combination of above-mentioned areas. You will join a very active department with inter-disciplinary research interests across Aeronautics and Astronautics where fundamental and industrially relevant problems are addressed with theoretical, experimental and computational methods. The department has broad research interests in numerical and experimental aerodynamics, computational engineering and design, astronautics and spacecraft engineering. The Department is within the School of Engineering where complementary work in Material science, X-ray/CT Scanning, additive manufacturing and macro-/micro-vibrations are carried out. The school has recently made major investments in new experimental facilities across different departments in experimental aerodynamics and propulsion, structural mechanics and additive manufacturing. The University also hosts one of the most powerful supercomputers in the UK.

The school is home to two Rolls Royce University Technology Centres (UTC), one in Propulsion systems noise and the other in Computational Engineering. Successful candidate(s) will have the opportunity to contribute to one or both UTCs. To be successful you will have an academic reputation, demonstrated by high-quality journal publications in your field as you will be committed to developing, largely through external funding, a research team in your area. In education, it goes without saying that you will develop and deliver a range of innovative teaching and assessment approaches in different areas of Aeronautics and Astronautics continually enhancing the student experience. You will support us in developing our range of modules and project work and to widen our teaching activities in your area of interest. It is essential you have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Engineering or related subject.

All applicants must include a Curriculum Vitae, a three-page research statement, which includes research vision and grant capture over the next five years and a one-page teaching statement highlighting the areas of interest and ideas for innovation in education in Aeronautics and Astronautics.
