Job Details

The Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Southampton invites applications for an Associate Professor/Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in all experimental aerodynamics and propulsion. Some research areas that would complement our existing strengths are:
  • Aerodynamics of rotorcraft/wind energy/turbomachinery and urban air mobility vehicles
  • Experiments in turbulent shear flows and multiphase flows
  • Experimental aeromechanics of bio-inspired vehicles and future propulsion concepts
  • Development of new diagnostics for aerodynamics and propulsion measurements

We would also welcome applications from candidates with expertise in any combination of above-mentioned areas. Applicants with general expertise in related areas within the remit of Experimental Aerodynamics will also be considered. You will join a very active department with inter-disciplinary research interests across Aeronautics and Astronautics where fundamental and industrially relevant problems are addressed with theoretical, experimental and computational methods. We have a strong Experimental Fluid Mechanics research thrust within the department with a new £25M building for brand-new facilities including a 138m long towing tank, an anechoic wind tunnel, a boundary layer wind tunnel, a water flume and a Refractive Index Matched Facility (under construction). We also have other lab-space with smaller facilities and for table-top experiments. Finally, the University is home to the flagship RJ Mitchell Wind Tunnel for large-scale aerodynamics. You will have an opportunity to collaborate with academics with expertise in numerical methods (and CFD) and also researchers interested in developing new unmanned air vehicles. The Department is within the School of Engineering where complementary work in Material science, X-ray/CT Scanning, additive manufacturing and macro-/micro-vibrations are carried out. The University also hosts one of the most powerful supercomputers in the UK.

To be successful you will have an academic reputation, demonstrated by high-quality journal publications in your field as you will be committed to developing, largely through external funding, a research team in your area. In education, it goes without saying that you will develop and deliver a range of innovative teaching and assessment approaches in different areas of Aeronautics and Astronautics continually enhancing the student experience. You will support us in developing our range of modules and project work and to widen our teaching activities in your area of interest. It is essential you have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Engineering or related subject.

Details of our different undergraduate programmes including modules that are currently delivered can be seen here: Aero & Astro

For informal enquiries, please contact Head of Department, Prof. Bharathram Ganapathisubramani, g.bharath@soton.ac.uk.
