Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322, with potential progression once in post to £42,792

Background

The post holder will be based in the group of Professor Paul Moss in the Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy; working on a Department of Health and Social Care funded project aimed at investigating SARS-CoV-2 specific T cell responses in various cohorts, particularly those living and working in the care home sector.

Main Duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.
  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret the results of own research and generate original ideas based on outcomes
  • Design a successful programme of investigation, managing individual components of the study from the start of the project to dissemination of research findings for publication, research seminars etc within set timeframes.
  • Make and contribute to decisions on day to day matters that affect their own work and that of the team
  • Keep abreast of the literature and maintain a good working knowledge of the background and current developments in the field of the project.
  • Attend research seminars, meetings and conferences and undertake training courses where required.
  • Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and for future collaboration.
  • Be aware of the risks in the work environment and contribute to COSSH and other regulatory assessments when appropriate
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research
  • Contribute to Institute research-related activities and research-related administration
  • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines


Person Specification

With a PhD in a relevant subject area and laboratory experience in immunology, preferably viral immunology, you are expected to have practical experience in immunophenotyping, and T-cell based functional assays. Proven experience in the isolation and enrichment of immune cell subsets would be an advantage.
  • experience of isolation, enrichment, and culturing of immune cell subsets
  • experience of phenotypic and functional characterisation of lymphocytic and myeloid cells from fresh and frozen specimens
  • extensive experience of flow cytometry and experience of cell sorting
  • knowledge of T cell cloning including the discovery of novel HLA restricted specific peptide epitopes.
  • knowledge of PCR techniques including RT-qPCR and endpoint PCR.
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
