Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £27,511 to £30,046, with potential progression once in post to £33,797

Grade 6

Full Time FTC for 1 year

Closing date 4 October 2020

Background

To contribute to running and research of the Geoghegan Group in the Institute of Microbiology & Infection, investigating virulence and colonisation factors of Staphylococcus aureus and their contributions to human disease. To assist in research by carrying out data collection or analyses and to create knowledge through providing research support for projects.

Summary of Role
  • Work within specified research grants and/or projects
  • Operate within area of specialism
  • Contribute to publications

Main Duties

The postholder will provide support to the project by using a variety of techniques to include, but not exclusively:

PCR
Molecular cloning
Western blotting
Recombinant protein expression and purification
Cell culture
  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation and literature reviews
  • Analyse research data as directed
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof
  • Develop or adapt techniques, models and methods
  • In collaboration with the supervisor, provide training and guidance as required to junior or newly appointed staff/students.
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Ensure that the lab facilities are maintained in a clean, functional and safe condition, reporting any problems through the appropriate channels.
  • Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research
  • Ensure all required Health and Safety assessments are in place, approved and up to date.
  • Maintaining lab records and inventories as appropriate.
