Job Details

Bristol Cyber Security Group, led by Professor Awais Rashid, is seeking to appoint a Senior Research Associate for 24 months, from 1 October 2020. The group forms part of the Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research (ACE-CSR) at University of Bristol. Bristol Cyber Security Group participates in several major initiatives, including leading projects as part of the Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security (RISCS) and the Research Institute on Trustworthy Cyber-Physical Systems (RITICS), leading the AgriTech sector within PETRAS, and leading the programme of work on developing a Cyber Security Body of Knowledge (CyBOK). The group also leads an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training on Trust, Identity, Privacy and Security in Large-scale Infrastructures. There is a strong expectation that you will actively contribute to the strong profile of Cyber Security at Bristol and its interdisciplinary ethos through participation in the development and publication of research results. This post is part of a larger investment focusing on interdisciplinary research relating to privacy and online safety and will be co-supervised by Dr Asma Vranaki.

Online safety is a tangled and complex policy issue that produces highly contested ideas at both domestic and international levels regarding rights, privacy, responsibility, liability, legality and effectiveness of interventions. This strand of work will engage closely with current work streams within UK Government, and also international initiatives, on policy and regulation - convening academics and practitioners from law, economics, public policy, human rights, international relations, law enforcement, software/hardware design, international standards as well as citizens' juries. You will contribute to systematically mapping the current state of the field with regards to policy and regulation engaging with stakeholders across the UK and global community, as well as synthesising and disseminating outputs from relevant work within the wider programme of research for use by policymakers and regulators.

This position is being advertised on a full time, open ended contract with funding up to 30/09/2023.

For informal discussion about the post you are welcome to contact: Professor Awais Rashid ( awais.rashid@bristol.ac.uk ) or Dr Asma Vranaki ( asma.vranaki@bristol.ac.uk ).
