Job Details

Bristol Cyber Security Group, led by Professor Awais Rashid, is seeking to appoint a Research Associate for 24 months, from 1 October 2020. The group forms part of the Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research (ACE-CSR) at University of Bristol. Bristol Cyber Security Group participates in several major initiatives, including leading projects as part of the Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security (RISCS) and the Research Institute on Trustworthy Cyber-Physical Systems (RITICS), leading the AgriTech sector within PETRAS, and leading the programme of work on developing a Cyber Security Body of Knowledge (CyBOK). The group also leads an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training on Trust, Identity, Privacy and Security in Large-scale Infrastructures. There is a strong expectation that you will actively contribute to the strong profile of Cyber Security at Bristol and its interdisciplinary ethos through participation in the development and publication of research results. This post is part of a larger investment focusing on interdisciplinary research relating to privacy and online safety and will be co-supervised by Dr Emma Williams.

Online safety is a tangled and complex policy and technology issue that produces highly contested ideas at both domestic and international levels regarding rights, privacy, responsibility, liability, legality and effectiveness of interventions. This strand of work reflects the importance of collective stewardship to encourage cultures of accountability and responsibility. It will work to embed responsible innovation practices across all associated projects within the research programme, inclusion of a range of diverse voices and responsiveness to changing directions, values and circumstances within society. You will contribute to systematically mapping the current state of the field with regards to responsible, inclusive and ethical innovation in privacy and online safety, engaging with stakeholders across the UK and global community, as well as synthesising and disseminating outputs from relevant work within the wider programme of research for use by academics, practitioners, policymakers, regulators and beyond.

For informal discussion about the post you are welcome to contact: Professor Awais Rashid ( awais.rashid@bristol.ac.uk ) or Dr Emma Williams ( emma.williams@bristol.ac.uk ).

The University of Bristol is committed to equality and we value the diversity of our staff and students.

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
