Developed for more than 10 years and recognized as one of Inria's most important software (, SOFA is an open-source software platform for multi-physics simulation. It now integrates a large number of models, solvers and algorithms, enabling the rapid development of new simulations. Several Inria teams are working in close collaboration on the continuous improvement of this consortium-driven platform (

Our team has acquired its expertise in the simulation of deformable models through surgical simulation and has taken a major role in the development of the SOFA simulation software.

Today, one of the scientific challenges of our team revolves around the simulation of soft robots in their environment of use to practice automatic decision making. For this, it is necessary that the interactions between the robot and its environment are correctly simulated and that an easy transfer to the real world is possible. This research can be carried out thanks to the SOFA environment and plugins specifically dedicated to soft robots (

But, often, simulation is done at the cost of a very (too) long computing time or a simplification of the environment. The algorithms used, especially for collision detection and response, are no longer always state of the art. It is to help us meet this new challenge that we are looking for a software engineer with skills in contact simulation.
As part of your missions, you will be required to work in collaboration with multiple actors (members of the Defrost team, engineers from other Inria teams, members of the consortium).
Accompanied by the Defrost team leader and after a training on SOFA software, you will work on the following missions:
Upgrading collision management algorithms (detection and response), in particular by passing the algorithms in the Eigen linear algebra library.
The implementation of contact resolution techniques using Direct Solver
Maintaining the codes that today allow SOFA to be used on a cluster and to be launched remotely.
In collaboration with the actors of the consortium, you will also take part in other missions aimed at improving the SOFA platform. You will also be in charge of co-organizing workshops and answering users' questions on this part. Your work will support research efforts in the field of decision making and high-level control of soft robots, using machine learning methods based on simulated data. It will have an impact and improve the SOFA experience for all members of the community.
