Job Details

We are looking for a research associate to model brain tumour biomarker levels in the blood of patients. The candidate is expected to work with a cross-disciplinary team, from the clinic to the lab, to extract understanding of what needs to be modelled, collect relevant data with partners, and produce a mathematical model with potential to be used as part of future work in predicting biomarker levels depending on disease burden.

This research project will explore the use of nanoparticles to fluorescently label very low levels of biomarkers in blood samples and other fluids and thus develop a new, quick and affordable test to detect early stage brain tumours without the need for costly or invasive procedures. Lab: The Hauert Lab's main expertise is engineering swarms across scales, from nanoparticles for cancer research to large robot swarms for environmental monitoring. We have wide expertise in cancer nanomedicine modelling, through previous work at MIT, and the ongoing EU H2020 EVO NANO project. You will be joining a vibrant and supportive community of cross-disciplinary researchers spanning, physics, mathematics, life sciences, robotics, mechanical engineering and more. Support includes regular one-on-one meetings, weekly lab lunches (currently virtual), training and teaching opportunities, and encouragements to pursue outreach activities. If needed, you will also have access to wet lab facilities for nanoparticle testing and imaging in Life Sciences and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Bristol.

The candidate is also expected to work well in large cross-disciplinary steams, to contribute to the life of the lab, and present work externally in public and academic settings.

The role is for one year full time starting as soon as possible (although with flexibility), or 50% over 2 years. Part-time/Flexible working is very welcome.

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
