Job Details

Stellenbosch University

Department of Forest and Wood Science (DFWS)

Post-doctoral fellowship in data-driven forest planning

Background

The DFWS carries out high quality research and education at an international level in close collaboration with the South African plantation-based forest industry, which intensively and sustainably harvests 18 million m3 annually from a resource base of 1.3 million ha using short, management-intensive rotations. The industry depends heavily on well-informed forward operational planning, which is an essential part of good forest management to ensure profitable, sustainable resource supply. Such current and future decision-making across the full forestry value chain must be supported by high-quality, well understood data. Within DFWS we see forest planning as having a fundamental role in integrating the data generated from measurements (increasingly from remote sensing) and models. We desire to develop stronger links with the new and developing AgriSciences Agro-Informatics initiative, as well as the new School of Data Science and Computational Thinking. To this end, we are adapting our focus to ensure that data-driven decision support is in line with trends in the revolutionary changes in use of remote-sensing and field-based technologies.

Duties:

The incumbent will take responsibility for research into optimised forest planning, scheduling of harvests and other decision-making using diverse streams data. This would include data from remote-sensing platforms, the IOT, harvesting systems and regular inventories, as well as growth and yield forecasting models. In his/her research, the incumbent must integrate informatics initiatives and research in and between the DFWS, the Faculty of AgriScience and the wider University and industry. He/she will participate in supervising PhD and M.Sc. students. The incumbent must play a substantial role in teaching Forest Science undergraduate students in modules focussing on forest resource planning and management.

Requirements:
  • A PhD degree in Forest/Wood Science or a related field obtained within the last five years;
  • Appropriate experience and skills in data management, modelling and informatics;
  • Language proficiency meeting the requirements of a multilingual university.

Recommendations:
  • Experience in teaching undergraduate level university courses;
  • Experience with analysis and acquisition of remotely sensed data;
  • Experience in the area of forest economics.

Stipend and Commencement of duties

The stipend for this position is granted for a one-year period. Please note that post-doctoral fellows are not appointed as employees in South Africa and their fellowships are awarded tax free, but they are not eligible for standard employee benefits.
