Job Details

Are you a successful researcher with specific expertise in cilia and airway biology? We are looking for an experienced postdoctoral fellow to join the Mennella Group, which is part of the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) in association with the School of Clinical and Experimental Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine and Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Research Centre.

The overall goal of the project is to be able to develop loss of function approaches in airway multiciliated cells to study new type of cilium identified in the laboratory and proteins identified in omics approaches. This project aims to understand the important biological mechanisms underlying cilia formation, ciliopathies and in particular Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia.

Applicants should hold a PhD* (or equivalent professional qualifications) in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Medical Engineering or similar areas. Applicants should have a good publication record. There will be an opportunity to supervise MSc or medical students.

The lab investigates how distinct supramolecular assembly of organelles are built from its individual components to ensure proper function using a combination of advanced imaging, proximity mapping and loss of function methods. In particular, we are interested in organelles such as centrosome, cilia and flagella. Primary and motile cilia play a fundamental role in cellular function by acting a signalling antenna in most cells of the human body and molecular sweeping machines in the lung and other tissues. We have previously developed a strategy for building nanometer-scale molecular maps of organelle structures by combining two super resolution microscopies (Mennella et al. Nature Cell Biology , 2012; Trends in Cell Biology 2014). We recently used these strategies to determine the organization of ciliary structures using super-resolution and Focus-Ion-Beam nano-tomography (Liu et al. Science Translational Medicine , 2020; Nguyen et al. Developmental Cell , 2020; Liu et al. Developmental Cell , 2020. This latter study revealed that among the hundreds of motile cilia of an airway cell, a hybrid cilium with features of primary and motile cilia is harbored, thereby changing the current view of airway multiciliated cells' function. The overall goal of this project is to develop tools and investigate the role of the hybrid cilium in airway multiciliated cells.

Your main activities would firstly be to conduct and disseminate research and liaise with project partners in the UK and abroad. The position is fixed term for 12 months in the first instance. There is a possibility for extension depending on internal and external funding opportunities.

For further information please contact Associate Professor Vito Mennella ( v.mennella@soton.ac.uk )

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
