Job Details
Applications are invited for the role of Research Associate in the School of Physics, Centre for Device Thermography and Reliability (CDTR), to contribute to the development of temperature and thermal characterization techniques for wide bandgap and ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor materials and devices (power electronics, RF electronics), from the materials side, and thermal management of devices to the packaging level. Particular research foci include next-generation power electronics, ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor materials and devices, including Ga2O3, AlN and BN for >10kV power electronics, providing the foundation for smart grids and for a greener society. This will be aligned with the Chair in Emerging Technologies awarded to Professor Kuball, Director of the CDTR, by the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) in 2020 and the Department of Energy funded ULTRA EFRC Centre the CDTR is partnered in. Of further interest are GaN-on-Diamond integrated materials and devices for ultra-high power RF electronics, aligned with our EPSRC £5M Programme Grant, for next-generation communications systems.
The CDTR group is active across many EU, US, and UK research programmes, and is funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng), the US Department of Energy, US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the European Space Agency and other funding agencies as well as by industry.
Applicants should have postgraduate (PhD) experience in physics, materials science or engineering, with a good publication record. The position requires expertise or interest in the development of thermal and optical measurement techniques and their application to electronic materials and devices, as well as an interest in materials/device simulation. A willingness to work together with, and co-supervise, PhD students of the CDTR will be necessary.
The position has funding for 2 years in the first instance.
