Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £41,526 to £49,553, with potential progression once in post to £55,750.

Grade 8

Full Time / Fixed Term Contract for 12 months

Background

To create and disseminate knowledge through initiating and conducting original research and through publication, within the cardiovascular disease field. Working within the research group of Professor Dipak Kotecha, clinician scientist and professor of Cardiology.

Job Summary
  • Help to coordinate activity between clinical cardiology (Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences) and heath data/artificial intelligence research (Health Data Research UK Midlands) as part of the cardAIc group
  • Initiate and conduct original research which has measurable outcomes and is reflected in a growing national and international reputation
  • Plan, design and co-ordinate research activities and programmes
  • Contribute significantly to academic and industry collaborations both nationally and internationally
  • Contribute significantly to strategy development and the formulation of operational plans
  • Support new grant submissions
  • Pro-actively identifies and exploits new opportunities for improving the field
  • Publish results of own research
  • Supervise research students
  • Contribute to the Department/Institute through management/leadership and the development of medium to long term plans
  • Develop and make substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement activities, widening participation, or similar activities at Department/School level or further within the University


Main Duties and Responsibilities

To coordinate, plan and carry out research, using appropriate methodology and techniques, including:
  • Contribute to the success of funded programmes, including the STEEER-AF trial (Stroke prevention and rhythm control Therapy: Evaluation of an Educational Programme of the European society of cardiology in a cluster-Randomised trial in patients with Atrial Fibrillation), the DaRe2THINK trial (Preventing stroke, premature death and cognitive decline in a broader community of patients with atrial fibrillation using healthcare data for pragmatic research: A randomised controlled trial), the RATE-AF trial (RAte control Therapy Evaluation in permanent Atrial Fibrillation), the BigData@Heart "> BigData@Heart consortium, the Beta-blockers in Heart Failure Collaborative Group and industry funded projects.
  • Plan, publish and/or execute high quality research, focusing on the priorities of the cardAIc group but also including personal research projects
  • Develop financial support for new projects by coordinating, submitting and contributing to new grant submissions
  • Assist in management of existing research activities, and/or supervision of other research staff
  • Present findings in high quality publications and conference proceedings
  • Develop novel methodologies and techniques in collaboration with the team
  • Supervise and examine students within the University
  • Provide expert advice to colleagues and students within your field of expertise
  • Contribute to the administration/management of research across the Department/Institute
  • Contributes significantly to strategy development and the formulation of operational plans to deliver strategy in the field of cardiovascular medicine and in particular, patients with atrial fibrillation and heart failure
  • Develop new opportunities for business engagement within the large existing consortium of industry partners in the BigData@Heart "> BigData@Heart group for the benefit of the College and University
  • Contribute to some administrative activities within the University, typically relating to research
  • Assess and identify current gaps and conflicts within and across teams to improve research productivity
  • Apply knowledge in a way that develops new intellectual understanding
  • Follow University and other local requirements on health and safety at work, personally and for colleagues
  • Confidently use a range of leadership styles appropriate to diverse needs (people, cultures and situations) leading to effective people management and team productivity.
  • Actively manages equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively challenging unacceptable behaviour.


Person Specification
  • Higher degree with relevance to cardiovascular medicine; MD, PhD or equivalent qualification
  • Post-doctoral research experience and scholarship within the field of cardiovascular medicine
  • Expertise in research in atrial fibrillation, heart failure and/or their combination
  • Experience and achievement reflected in a growing reputation, including presentation of research findings at international conferences
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in planning, undertaking and project managing research to deliver high-quality results
  • Experience in managing and coordinating other staff and/or teams
  • Previous experience in conducting or supporting clinical trials
  • Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied
  • Ability to identify issues with the potential to impact on protected groups and take appropriate action
  • The post does not include any clinical activity, but previous exposure to clinical environments and the needs of patients with cardiovascular disease is a prerequisite.
