Job Details

Full Time/Part Time, Fixed term until 28/02/2022

We have two posts available at 0.5 FTE each, providing simulation modelling expertise across two related NIHR-funded projects (see Job Descriptions attached). Due to the links between the projects, we are advertising these posts together, as a full-time fixed term appointment. We would consider either full-time (or 0.8FTE for an experienced applicant).

These Senior research fellowship posts are a part of two projects funded by the National Institute for Health Research. The aim of the ECOP (Emergency Care for Older People) project, which involves clinicians, health services researchers, health economists, and simulation experts from several UK universities, is to determine how best to deliver appropriate care to frail older patients in busy emergency departments. Southampton's role in the project is to use computer simulation to model the potential impact (on patients, staff, services and costs) of implementing different types of emergency interventions for older people, looking not only at the impact at specific points in the pathway within the hospital, but also at the consequences for the wider healthcare system. The aim of the Frailty Dynamics project is to understand the development and progression of frailty in an ageing population, using simulation modelling to address key uncertainties about the impact of frailty on health care demand and outcomes.

The post-holder(s) will hold a PhD in healthcare-related Operational Research/Management Science and will have extensive knowledge and experience of simulation applied in healthcare settings, and of working alongside NHS staff; strong statistical and data analytics skills; expertise in using simulation software; recent experience of using NHS datasets.

The posts are suitable for one person (1 FTE) or two people working 0.5 FTE each (please specify which post you are most interested in) who can (with appropriate supervision / support) undertake simulation modelling aspects of the work in collaboration with the statisticians, health economists and other members of both project teams. We will consider applications from candidates wishing to work part time and job share provided we can match the range of skills required. For both projects, the post holder will benefit from close support from a multi-disciplinary team including health economists, operational researchers, statisticians and experts in the use of large-scale, routine health care data. For both projects, the post holder(s) will join the CORMSIS community of operational researchers within the Faculty of Social Sciences and across the University. In the case of Frailty Dynamics, the post holder will benefit from close links to the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Wessex.

Informal enquiries are welcome. Please contact Professor Sally Brailsford ( scb@soton.ac.uk ).

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
