Summary of Role

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Medical Education to join the Birmingham Medical School. The newly appointed Lecturer (2 year fixed term contract) will contribute to the delivery and development of the undergraduate Medicine (MB ChB) programme and postgraduate Education for Health Care Professions (E4HP). The Lecturer will be an experienced educator with an established track record in curriculum design and implementation, assessment and an interest in digital education to continue to innovate and deliver a first class education for future doctors and practicing health care professionals. They will work closely with the Dean of the Birmingham Medical School, the Programme Directors of MB ChB and Education for Health Professionals and academic Medical Education team to support the maintenance and enhancement of student teaching, learning and assessment.

The pandemic has meant a rapid evolution of the requirements of this role. The need to develop a resilient model of educational delivery for the MB ChB has meant that there is an ongoing need to create and deliver both online and bimodal materials. In addition, the programme has had to introduce more frequent alternatives to all assessments to include novel work based assessment for the clinical years. Support for these activities will form a key component of the Lecturer's role and they will be expected to deliver core teaching requirements such as facilitating learning sessions, delivering seminars and lectures, and writing and delivering assessments. In addition, the Lecturer will be expected to support the activities of the E4HP programme particularly in relation to conversion of materials to an on line format.

Implementation of a recent MB ChB curriculum review was paused during the pandemic. This work will restart in 2021 and the Lecturer will spend up to 50% of their time on development of the new curriculum. This role will focus on the development of the curriculum, including the use of digital education within the MBChB, to enable students to demonstrate that they can meet the GMC's 2018 Outcomes for Graduates, preparation of the Birmingham Medical School and its medical students for the national Medical Licensing Assessment and to ensure graduates are able to make the transition to the Foundation Programme in the NHS with confidence.

The Lecturer will be involved in student academic support joining a group of Personal Academic Tutors (PATs). They will be expected to deliver excellent teaching that inspires students, and is informed by discipline-based research. This will include regular small group teaching either face to face or virtually.
