Lecturer - Data Science

The Department of Industrial Engineering focuses on the following areas of research to improve global competitiveness: Operations Research,

Data Analytics and Machine Learning Applications in Industrial Engineering; Operations Management and Logistics; Advanced Manufacturing; and Engineering and Technology Management.

The incumbent will be expected to join the Data Science Research Group to advance the Department's Data Science research and teaching agenda further. The incumbent will also be expected to keep abreast of the latest academic content and practical applications within Data Science.

This is a permanent appointment tailored for an academically strong candidate who is currently studying towards a PhD in a Data Science topic or a recent PhD graduate who wishes to pursue an academic career in Data Science. Reporting to a senior researcher, the incumbent will perform or assist with research and lecturing duties.

Duties

Specific duties will include, although will not be limited to:

• Assisting with academic guidance and management of the Data Science research group;
• Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of Data Science and related subjects;
• Providing supervision and leadership to postgraduate students;
• Research in Data Science and technology transfer to and from the industry;
• Actively pursuing and completing PhD studies within two years following appointment, if applicable.

Job requirements

• A PhD in a Data Science-related discipline, or an M in a Data Science-related discipline with at least three years'' relevant technical or research experience in Data Science in the industry;
• Scholarly achievements in a Data Science focus area;
• A strong academic record;
• The academic ability to present modules in Data Science in the Industrial Engineering undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum;
• Good verbal and written communication skills;
• A desire and commitment to complete a PhD focussing on a Data Science discipline, if applicable;
• A strong commitment to become a scholar in Data Science.

Recommendation

• With reference to Data Science disciplines, research and teaching experience in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Analytics, or Big Data Platforms and Architectures;
• Programming experience, specifically in Python or R, with experience in big data architecture development;
• Completed supervision and assessment of students in undergraduate Data Science projects and master's theses;
• Strong programming experience;
• Proficiency in Afrikaans or another indigenous South African language;
• Success in attracting research funding, or experience in the development of industrial Data Science solutions and projects.
