Supervisory Team: Dr. D.J.J. Toal & Prof. A.J. Keane

Project description

A significant proportion of engineering design involves making decisions with respect to the geometry of a sub-system. However, designing a sub-system in isolation of its wider system level context can be a recipe for disaster and can potentially lead to sub-optimal overall performance and costly rework later in the design process. Effective collaboration between the many stakeholders involved in the design of a system, however, can improve overall system performance, reduce cost and accelerate the design process as a whole. While there are many approaches within the literature to help designers make sub-system design decisions or perform optimisation in isolation an open question still remains as to how best to enable designers to effectively collaborate in the assessment and trade-off between competing sub-system topologies.

This project will build upon the latest advances in machine learning, artificial intelligence and geometry representation and manipulation to develop novel approaches to enable engineers to more effectively and efficiently explore the impact of sub-system level topological decisions on overall performance.

It is funded by Rolls-Royce plc as part of their support to the R-R University technology Centre for Computational Engineering at Southampton. In addition to the basic tax free student stipend of £15,141pa R-R will provide a further tax free stipend increment of £9,000 pa which brings the total stipend to a level equivalent to a taxable salary of just over £29,000 pa and therefore in line with their graduate recruitment schemes. The stipend will rise in subsequent years. Funding for travel to international conferences will be available.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Prof Andy Keane, Computational Engineering and Design Research Group, Email: ajk@soton.ac.uk , Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 2944.
