Job summary

The University of Birmingham has a proud and illustrious track record in performance sport and are looking to appoint a Performance Sport Lab Technician to assist with the continuation of this work. The role is designed to manage the applied sports physiology lab in the University's Performance Centre as well as assisting the sports science and wider Performance Centre team with support to athletes and teams.

Main duties

Under the supervision of the Sport Physiology Lead manage the sport physiology lab, assist in the design, delivery and monitoring of sport science support to UoB Sport & Fitness clients.
  • Provide operational support to Sport Physiology Lead
  • Develop skills and understanding of vyntus, bisoen, AlterG, SRM and other equipment
  • Liaise with suppliers and the School of SportExR to maintain and improve support between departments regarding lab space and equipment
  • Maintain record keeping practices and contribute to the Performance Centre's and Sport & Fitness assets register
  • Repair instrumentation under the direction of the Sport Physiology Lead
  • Provide sport science support to UoB Sport & Fitness, clubs/teams and scholars.
  • Assist the sport science team on supporting head coaches in priority sports
  • Assist and lead on assigned testing & monitoring sessions
  • Design of training programmes to enhance current concurrent training programmes


Other Duties
  • It is a requirement of the post holder to be conversant with and work to Universities Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults Policy and Procedures and UK Anti-doping/UoB Sport & Fitness policy.
  • Inform UoB Sport & Fitness H&S Advisor of new/forthcoming events or activities the team are working on, to enable best practise.
  • Maintain accurate records of Risk Assessments
  • To actively participate in job chats and personal development reviews; agree objectives and targets and work to achieve these within agreed timelines.
  • To assist the University in Open Days, Recruitment Days and other UoB Sport & Fitness Big Events.
  • Supporting equality and valuing diversity by challenging bias, prejudice, and intolerance if appropriate or by bringing it to the attention of a manager.
  • The post holder will moderate their own behaviour to avoid unfair discriminatory impact or bias on others.
  • Energy, commitment and enthusiasm to work within a busy environment, commitments to flexible hours including working outside normal office days and hours - evening and weekends as required
  • To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be requested and which can be accommodated within the post holders grading level.


Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

Knowledge
  • An awareness of the needs of performance athletes
  • An understanding of applied sport science in a sport setting
  • An understanding of coaching styles and practical delivery
  • An understanding of what equality and diversity is and why it is important, including an ability to learn about relevant policies and procedures relating to equality and diversity
  • An ability to identify equality and diversity issues and either address these or bring them to the attention of a manager


Skills
  • Demonstration of strong organisation skills
  • Ability to work autonomously, under pressure and show initiative
  • Ability to work as part of a busy team and working effectively under pressure to tight timelines
  • Affective problem solving and decision making skills
  • A high level understanding of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook
  • Good communication skills


Qualifications
  • GCSE Maths and English (minimum grade C) or equivalent
  • Eligible for BASES SE pathway


Experience
  • Experience with high performance sport
  • Experience and understanding of the Higher Education environment and its demands


Planning and organising
  • Planning and organising of service work on equipment around needs of delivery and support.
  • Plan work to facilitate support work
