The University of Birmingham Estates Office is responsible for both the master planning and stewardship of our extensive estate. Our team is made up of over 180 dedicated members of staff, including 10 apprentices studying Mechanical or Electrical qualifications over a 4-year scheme; all striving to deliver a world class university experience for the benefit of all students, staff, academics and visitors. After our staff, our physical estate is the largest single enabler for our world-class teaching, research and providing a fantastic student experience.

Our estate is large and varied covering 672 acres, with over 200 buildings of different ages, complexities, physical condition and use, ranging from grade 1 and 2 listed properties to brand new state of the art learning and research spaces. It consists of two main campus sites (Edgbaston & Selly Oak) along with properties in Stratford upon Avon,  Ansty  (near Coventry), Coniston (in Cumbria), Ironbridge and Dubai. The total gross internal area of the estate is 538,000 m2. 74% of the non-residential estate is in building condition A and B and we typically spend circa £9M on energy and water each year.

We are committed to sustainability and have achieved a 20% reduction in CO2 four years ahead of target and we generate 75% of our own energy via on site combined heat and power plants. Furthermore, we continue to reduce our carbon footprint by 3,000 tonnes per year on average and maintain more than 9,200 trees.

Job Summary

The post holder will work with and supervise the Maintenance Team and contract staff and achieve a high standard of workmanship within a safe working environment. The Deputy Team Leader will ensure the efficient organisation of the directly employed labour workforce as directed and be responsible for time keeping and good conduct within the team. The post will include participation in the Management Information System.

Main Duties
  • Organise day to day control of resources to include labour, equipment, transport and materials to enable the directly employed labour force to achieve the standards laid out in the Performance Specification.
  • Responsible for the preview, specifying and quantifying of Maintenance work for the Management Information System as directed by the Team Leaders or Direct Labour Manager.
  • To ensure accurate completion and certification of information on Planon, time sheets and records. Direct supervision of all staff within the team on a daily basis. Be responsible for key issue and security procedures.
  • Ensure that all tools and equipment are operated properly in compliance with health and safety legislation and in accordance with the Division's code of safe working practices. Assist with health and safety training for staff within the Maintenance Section.
  • The post holder will liaise with the Team Leaders/Direct Labour Managers or clients and users directly as needed. To ensure that the Maintenance Services preparations for special events are satisfactory.
  • To provide 'stand in' cover for the Team Leader in their absence as directed by the Direct Labour Manager.
  • Assist in the identification of the training needs of staff within the group in line with the Division's training policy and reporting them to the Team Leader for inclusion into the Division's training programme.

  • To carry out such other duties as required by the Director of Estates or as instructed on behalf of the same.


Person Specification

Qualifications
  • Full driving license
  • Recognised CITB/EITB qualification or equivalent and preferably hold City and Guilds Certificates or other approved training acceptable by the University of Birmingham and the appropriate training boards
  • Health and Safety qualification


Experience
  • Significant maintenance repairs experience
  • Good practical working knowledge and experience of multiple disciplines
  • Experience of people management
  • Skills in analysing and solving a wide range of practical problems in managing a Trades Team, and ensuring a high quality service.
  • Ability to develop improvements to processes (service organisational) and similar
  • Experience of working in a highly customer focussed environment
