Centre for Systems Modelling and Quantitative Biomedicine, Institute of Metabolism and Systems Medicine

Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322, with potential progression once in post to £42,792. As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum salary that can be offered is Grade 7, salary £32,817.

Role Summary

The primary purpose of this 9 month role is to create and contribute to the creation of knowledge, taking an interdisciplinary approach including the use of novel quantitative methods such as mathematical modelling and machine learning, to investigate the chronodiagnosis of endocrine disorders such as Cushing's, Addison's, and Primary Aldosteronism. The position is funded by the charity Above & Beyond.

Background

Based within the Centre for Systems Modelling and Quantitative Biomedicine (SMQB), the post-holder will work closely with MRC Research Fellow Dr Eder Zavala, Centre Director Professor John Terry and Senior Clinical Research Fellow Dr Georgina Russell (University of Bristol). The SMQB is a new strategic activity at the University of Birmingham spanning the Colleges of Medical & Dental Sciences and Engineering and Physical Sciences. The Centre is composed of researchers and innovators with backgrounds in mathematics, computer science and physics who are excited by tackling research challenges from biology, biomedicine and the clinic. Housed within the Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research, the integration within a medical school presents unique opportunities to bring communities together and to solve pressing healthcare challenges. Current Centre staff include 3 Professors, 1 Birmingham Fellow, 4 independently funded Research Fellows, 4 post-doctoral researchers and 2 PhD students. Researchers are supported by a Centre Manager, a Senior Research Manager and a Communities Engagement Manager. This reflects the Centre's commitment to career development and engaged research. Future opportunities at this grade may become available at the Centre.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop machine learning methods and mathematical models for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc.
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research
  • Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration
  • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research
  • Deal with challenges that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Promote equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture


Person Specification
  • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
  • High level analytical capability and machine learning skills
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
