We are seeking a Post-doctoral Research Fellow (.80 FTE) to work on a 24-month research project investigating memory and metacognition in children. The project seeks to determine how legal decision-makers (e.g., police officers, prosecutors, judges, jurors) could estimate the accuracy of information in honest memory reports from children. The project will investigate children's metacognitionthe ability to monitor when their own memories are accurate or inaccurate. Specifically, the project will: (1) conduct fundamental research on metacognitive development in children (aged 4-11), (2) examine in applied research if children's metacognition can be harnessed in police training to improve child assessment, and (3) build capacity for accurate child memory assessment in the Criminal Justice System by co-developing with stakeholders, recommendations for policy, practice, and future research. The research project is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

Summary of Role

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.
  • To pursue a programme of research as agreed with Dr Melissa Colloff
  • To develop experimental materials
  • To undertake data collection with child and adult participants using online platforms (or in person)
  • Manage, analyse and interpret data
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Contribute innovative ideas and evidence-based support (literature review) to the project
  • Manage stakeholder groups and make major contributions to stakeholder events by communicating effectively with non-academics
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc. in outlets of international standing
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research
  • Deal with the problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Take an active role in developing new research initiatives
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research related administration
  • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under the supervision of a project leader

Person Specification
  • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree or near completion of (e.g., PhD) relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications, and experience in experimental psychology
  • High level analytical capability and willingness to learn and implement statistical techniques independently
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to academic and non-academic audiences
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones, in fields of either memory/metacognition/child cognitive development
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources affectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
  • Co-ordinate own work with other to avoid conflict of duplication of effort
  • Ability to coordinate and organise meetings, workshops or seminars and to play an appropriate role presenting at such events
  • Excellent time management, proven ability to meet targets, milestones and contracted outputs and work to deadlines.

  • Experience collecting data from child participants
  • Experience working with criminal justice or non-academic partners
  • Advanced statistical and modelling techniques or programming experience
  • Experience in Type-1 and Type-2 signal detection analyses.
