Research Fellow - Health Economics

Background

The Institute of Applied Health Research wishes to appoint a Research Fellow in Health Economics with an emphasis on Service Delivery Research. The post is supported by an NIHR Programme Grant titled Development And Evaluation Of A Complex EPrescribing-based Antimicrobial Stewardship (ePAMS+) Intervention For Hospitals and provides an exciting opportunity to develop a career in the economics of service delivery and to develop innovative research capacity. It is particularly suitable for someone with a PhD in Health Economics, but those with PhDs in a broadly related area (e.g. biostatistics, operational research, welfare economics) who are interested in moving into health economics are also welcome to apply. This post would also be suitable for a mathematician or a statistician with an interest economics, an economist with an interest in statistics or an epidemiologist with good numeracy skills.

Summary of Role

This job provides a superb opportunity for a committed quantitative researcher to develop an international profile in a high demand but presently under-researched area of service delivery health economics. It provides an opportunity to work on established evaluations of national service delivery interventions while developing cutting edge methods for such evaluations. It also offers an intellectually stimulating yet supportive disciplinary environment including well-formed Health Economics and Statistics groups. We are looking to recruit and support an academic who wishes to shape the contours of their discipline and raise International prominence.

The post-holder will be required to:

• Conduct health economic evaluations of service delivery interventions to improve the quality and safety of healthcare.
• Develop methodology and new applied research in the area of health economic evaluation of service delivery interventions, working closely with Professor Richard Lilford and the Health Economics Unit at the Institute of Applied Health Research, University of Birmingham.

The Institute for Applied Health Research hosts a sizeable community of health economists and economic modellers, and is home to the Health Economics Unit. As well as joining this community, you will benefit from working within a multidisciplinary team of systematic reviewers, information specialists, behavioural psychologists, clinicians and statisticians, and will participate in assessing and analysing evidence for the clinical and cost-effectiveness of applied health interventions, many of which have national significance.

The post holder will be responsible to Professor Richard Lilford, Professor of Public Health and Director of the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) West Midlands. The research group, led by Prof Richard Lilford, also undertakes international research to improve health in developing countries, including the economics of emergency transport systems and micro-finance/self-help interventions, in which the applicant would have a chance to contribute.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlines below.

• To pursue high quality research in health economics with special emphasis on health service delivery, providing support to applied researchers
• Contribute to writing bids for research funding to support a developing research programme in low- and middle-income countries as well as in the UK. You will also be encouraged to apply for Fellowship funding
• Undertake management/administration arising from research
• To contribute to the publication of research results in relevant highly rated peer reviewed journals.
• Present research outputs to a range of audiences, for example at seminars and as posters and contribute to the production of high quality reports for funding bodies.
• Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research
• Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
• Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration
• Independently develop and conduct research projects.

Person Specification

• PhD in health economics or a broadly related quantitative subject.
• High level analytical capability and strong aptitude for quantitative methodology e.g. statistics or decision-analytic modelling.
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly
• Evidence of flair, creativity and commitment
• Fluency in relevant software including but not limited to: R, Python, Stata, or SAS, and ideally other specialised software such as Stan or related Bayesian packages.
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
• Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project with a natural inclination to work collaboratively.
