Background

How warm our future will be depends primarily on two factors: (i) how much CO2 and other greenhouse gases humanity emits in years to come and (ii) how sensitive the Earth system is to greenhouse gas forcing. The only observations available to directly constrain the response of the Earth system to concentrations of atmospheric CO2 expected by the end of this century come from the geological record, which provides a rich seam of examples of the Earth system operating under high-CO2 conditions, providing unique testing grounds for our imperfect climate models. You will be part of a large team of scientists using an integrated model-data approach to tackle these questions via the NERC large grant SWEET - Super-Warm Early Eocene Temperatures and climate: understanding the response of the Earth system to high CO2 through integrated modelling and data.

Summary of Role

Using recent data compilations of deep ocean carbonate chemistry and newly-generated δ11B reconstructions of Early Eocene ocean pH, the PDRA will use the Earth system model cGENIE to develop and refine techniques to reconstruct atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations during the Early Eocene Climate Optimum.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlines below.
  • Running ensembles of cGENIE model experiments
  • Developing new modelling approaches
  • Plotting and exploring model outputs using e.g. Python or MATLAB
  • Engaging in science outreach relevant to the SWEET proposal
  • Collaborating and communicating effectively with other researchers on the SWEET team
  • Presenting findings at scientific meetings, conferences, or seminar series
  • Publishing findings from the project in peer-reviewed journals


Person Specification
  • PhD in relevant field
  • Dec 2020 start date
  • Experience with Earth system modelling
  • Knowledge of deep time, greenhouse climates, and experience with the global carbon cycle and carbonate chemistry
  • Experience with coding (e.g. Python or MATLAB, but ideally some experience with FORTRAN)
  • Experience with model development desirable
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly and coordinate with multiperson research teams
  • Ability to work independently
