The role

This position is an excellent opportunity for an able and ambitious mixed-methods public health researcher to be involved in developing* and conducting evaluations of public health programmes and other interventions. The post is based in a leading academic public health department and involves working collaboratively with local authority or other public health practice and public partners to co-design and conduct evaluations of novel and generalizable public health interventions.

What will I be doing?

You will work as part of an National Institute for Health Research's (NIHR) Public Health Intervention Responsive Studies Team (PHIRST) and will contribute to the overall design, day-to-day delivery, completion and dissemination of research funded to be undertaken in collaboration with colleagues, local public health practitioners and other stakeholders.

The NIHR PHIRST teams are a new initiative designed to undertake responsive evaluations of public health practice interventions with an emphasis on local government. This research is intended to help inform the delivery and implementation of current or future public health interventions which aim to improve the health of the public and reduce inequalities in health.

You should apply if
  • You want to contribute to improving public health and reducing health inequalities!
  • You have a track record of excellence in research and strong project management skills
  • You have knowledge of key research designs and research governance issues relevant to public health research
  • You hold knowledge of complex intervention development and evaluation
  • You have experience of collecting and analysing both qualitative and quantitative data, designing data collection tools, preparing and managing applications for ethical approval, reviewing literature, recruiting to research studies and conducting consultations with relevant public and practice partners
  • You have an excellent track record of writing up and communicating research findings to varied audiences
  • You can build strong, effective relationships with a range of people from different sectors and levels of seniority
  • You are someone who can work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team


*The Shanghai Ranking currently places Public Health at the University of Bristol as 3rd in the UK and 8th globally.
