The Division of Medical Physiology promotes a culture of excellence in the learning and teaching of medical physiology to undergraduate and postgraduate health sciences students, relevant and impactful research, social impact and internal and external service delivery. The Division provides a dynamic, respectful and compassionate academic environment in which both staff and students are encouraged to develop and thrive.

Duties:

Reporting to the Head: Division of Medical Physiology, the incumbents duties are distributed across six overarching themes: learning and teaching, mentorship/supervision, research, funding generation, service delivery and social impact, and will include the following:
  • Teaching, learning and assessing undergraduate and postgraduate students in medical / human physiology;
  • Applying innovative learning and teaching practices;
  • Curriculum planning and development;
  • Managing and coordinating academic programmes, modules and activities;
  • Providing research training, supervision and mentorship to postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows;
  • Conducting high quality research in physiology, with a strong focus on research relevant to the burden of disease in Africa and generally aligning with the main research focus areas of the Division;
  • Actively publishing research and scholarly work in high impact, peer-reviewed journals;
  • Expanding and strengthening national and international collaboration through strategic networking;
  • Actively seeking research funding from national and international funding bodies;
  • Engaging in social impact and community outreach programmes;
  • Participating and fulfilling Divisional duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:
  • Doctorate relevant to the field of medical physiology;
  • Proven experience in undergraduate learning, teaching (including online teaching) and assessment in physiology;
  • Proven experience in curriculum development and planning;
  • Proven experience in the training and supervision of postgraduate students (at Master's and PhD level) in medical / human physiology or related fields;
  • A track record as an established, independent researcher with publications in accredited and recognised scientific journals, including demonstration of first and/or senior authorship, and related research outputs;
  • Scholarly recognition by peers such as awards, prizes, invitations to examine theses / dissertations and academic courses, invitations to review journal manuscripts, invited / plenary speaker at scientific meetings, etc.;
  • A track record of attracting research funding and grant awards;
  • Experience in social impact or community engagement activities.


Recommendation:
  • Primary degree in a clinical discipline;
  • Proven experience in supervision of post-doctoral fellows;
  • NRF rated;
  • Principal or co-investigator of current, on-going research grants from a national or international funding body;
  • Current, on-going participation in international research collaboration.
