Job Details
The role
The University of Bristol Law School is seeking to appoint an excellent legal researcher to work as a Research Associate for an ambitious 18-month project, 'Fraud During a Pandemic: Identifying and Appraising New Challenges for the Criminal Justice Response in England and Wales'. The project is funded by UKRI/AHRC. The Research Associate position will begin by January 2021, and will report to the project lead, Dr Jennifer Collins. The research project aims to: (i) map the landscape of how fraudulent conduct is changing during the pandemic, and (ii) provide a normative framework for how emerging dishonest conduct ought to be charged and prosecuted at this time. The project draws unprecedented close links between the agencies involved on the ground and in policy-making, with academic analysis. This vital collaboration will produce compelling and robust theoretical analysis as well as conclusions and recommendations about fraud governance in a time of crisis.
What will you be doing?
Specific research activities will include: reviewing of criminal law and criminal justice literatures and producing cogent literature review reports; directed mapping and analysis of emerging types, nature and scale of fraudulent conduct; involvement in roundtable discussions on fraud; thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews; if appropriate, input into building a theoretical framework for analysing fraudulent conduct in the current pandemic; proof-checking of research findings for publication; involvement in dissemination of research findings, including through social media and a project blog. The post-holder can work remotely but will have regular online meetings with the project lead, as well as other relevant partners of the project.
You should apply if
The post-holder will have a legal research background, ideally with specialist knowledge in criminal law, criminal justice, regulation, or public law that can be applied in the context of high-level analysis of the criminal law and criminal justice system of England and Wales. They will need to be able to conduct doctrinal, legal and regulatory analysis, and to contribute to critical and interdisciplinary analysis. Experience of public communication of research is desirable.
