The role

The Perivoli Africa Research Centre (PARC) is seeking to recruit a 1.0 FTE Research Associate to support a Willliam and Flora Hewlett Foundation funded project on ' Care systems, economies and harnessing Africa's demographic transition '. A first 3-year phase of the programme will run from January 2021 - January 2024.

What will you be doing?

Based at the School for Policy Studies and Perivoli Africa Research Centre (PARC) and spending substantial periods of time at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) in Nairobi, you will work with co-PIs Professor Isabella Aboderin (University of Bristol), Dr. Catherine Kyobutungi (APHRC) and Professor Ito Peng (University of Toronto), to help inform the development of transformative care systems and economies for Africa, as part of the continent's endeavour to harness its demographic transition and forge a robust post COVID-19 future.

This position will involve, among other roles:

(1) Generating a coherent body of empirical evidence, theoretical perspectives, and macroeconomic tools to clarify the case and directions for investments in the provisioning of, and social infrastructure for early child care (ECC) and long-term care (LTC) for older adults in the study countries and Africa more broadly.

(2) Bringing together relevant i) policy actors to drive the use of findings and tools in national and regional policy debates and agenda setting and ii) a constituency of African and international scholars invested in building on the evidence to advance global scientific debates.

You should apply if

You have excellent written and verbal communication in English, the ability to collaborate, work as a team and seek advice when needed, and to engage in writing and face-to-face with academics, external partners, and public audiences.

A PhD in a field relevant to the research project, either completed or pending post-viva corrections. Experience in Doctoral-level research in a relevant research area/discipline, expertise in ageing and/or care studies, expertise in qualitative and quantitative methods, the ability to engage in and contribute to interdisciplinary academic working, to manage administrative tasks for the project, meet deadlines, manage competing priorities and solve problems.

Prior experience of research and stakeholder engagement in sub-Saharan Africa is desirable, as is experience in managing project budgets, a record of research publications appropriate for your career stage, and a working knowledge of French.

We particularly encourage applications from African researchers in Africa or her diaspora.
