Job Details

The role

We seek an experienced professional researcher to lead the investigation of learning mechanisms in the intact brain. This work will be overseen by Dr. Paul Chadderton, who has recently been awarded a Wellcome Trust Investigator award to address this topic in the rodent cerebellum. The plan of work comprises measurement of neuronal population activity in vivo during learning. As such, the post holder will be a specialist in advanced neurophysiological techniques (either calcium imaging or electrophysiological recording in behaving animals) and will conduct experiments using these technologies within the School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience. The purpose of the job is to conduct world-leading research, to publish in top quality journals and disseminate results to the international community at large. The post holder will also manage collaborations with researchers in related disciplines at University of Bristol and elsewhere to maximise the impact of this research.

What will I be doing?

Research Responsibilities
  • To design a range of experiments in relation to the project.
  • To set up and run experiments in consultation with the principal investigator, ensuring that experiments are appropriately supervised and supported.
  • To record, analyse and write up the results of all experiments, maintaining a lab book that will serve as a permanent record of the methodologies and the experiments.
  • To prepare and present findings of research activity to colleagues.
  • To contribute to the writing, submission and revision of manuscripts to be submitted to appropriate peer reviewed journals.
  • To prepare progress reports on research for funding bodies if so requested by the principal investigator.
  • To contribute to the preparation and drafting of research bids and proposals.
  • To contribute to the overall activities of the research team and department as appropriate.
  • To take responsibility for ensuring that equipment is safe and maintained in working order.
  • As duties and responsibilities change, the job description will be reviewed and amended in consultation with the post holder.

Administration Responsibilities
  • To manage the research conduct of Master and Doctoral students as appropriate.
  • To take responsibility for ensuring that equipment is safe and maintained in working order.
  • To manage transgenic mouse colonies where appropriate.

Teaching Responsibilities

As this role is a Pathway 2 (Research) role, there are no formally specified teaching duties required of the role-holder. However, other commitments permitting, the role-holder may be given development opportunities to undertake activities such as teaching on Masters and Doctoral programmes and/ or supervising MSc dissertations within the School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, as appropriate.

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
