The role

Universities can do more if they operate at a greater scale. The GW4 Alliance was formed by four leading research universities in our region in order to tackle the greatest research challenges, in the broadest sense.

The shared initiatives need shaping, facilitating and catalysing. We are looking for an exceptional talent to direct this through interacting with senior staff and academics in the four universities, government departments, funders, communities and businesses.

What will I be doing?

Co-shape the future of our unique alliance between four of the nation's foremost research-intensive universities: Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter.

Leading and manage this major research powerhouse, converting concepts into funded activities that can make a difference regionally, nationally and globally. Crucially, you will promote our initiatives at the highest level across a host of stakeholder organisations in diverse sectors.

You should apply if

An extensive track record of success in building strategic and influential relationships with policy makers, funders and governments. Direct experience of strategic research and innovation partnerships spanning a range of disciplines is vital. We expect you to demonstrate a proven ability to deliver large, collaborative projects within a complex environment.

Naturally, you also will bring to the role substantial leadership experience in higher education, with up-to-the minute knowledge of research and policy.

For an informal discussion about this opportunity, please contact Dr Jon Hunt, the Executive Director of Research & Enterprise at the University of Bristol in the first instance ( ). Alternatively, the Pro-Vice-Chancellors (Research) at any of the four GW4 institutions would be pleased to engage with you on this topic should you prefer (Professor Jonathan Knight PVC-R Bath - , Professor Phil Taylor PVC-R Bristol - , Professor Kim Graham PVC-R Cardiff - , Professor Neil Gow PVC-R Exeter ).

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
