Job Details

You will join an international collaboration looking at the application of oligonuclkeotides (ONs) in medicinal chemistry, funded through the H2020 MSC ETN OLIGOMED. You will be based at the University of Southampton, one of the UK's top research-intensive universities. Chemistry at Southampton has a national and international reputation for excellence with world-leading facilities.

Modified ONs are considered the next generation drugs in personalised medicine. We are developing a platform technology which involves design and synthesis of modified ONs, optimisation of cell targeting and uptake, and medicinal studies in cancer, Huntingdon's Disease and cardiovascular diseases. To achieve this, we have a dedicated European network comprising of academic research teams in Southampton (lead), Stockholm, Gent, Bordeaux, Marseille, Udine and Cambridge, and includes industrial partners in London, Warsaw, Stockholm and Goteborg, as well as clinical partners in Southampton and Stockholm.

As part of this team you will develop novel DNA structures, including modifiers, that are targeting cancer cells specifically, and include the formation of bio-active secondary structures, in particular G-quadruplexes (GQ). You will work with external groups to further develop cross-linking within the GQ and conjugation with cell targeting units and evaluate their biological activity, including telomerase inhibition. Some preparation of materials using our existing procedures is also expected, and the compounds you make will be studied in a number of laboratories and facilities across the network. You will work as part of a team to ensure that materials of the required quantity and purity are produced on the timeframe needed for the biomedical investigations.

You will be skilled in practical synthetic organic chemistry and demonstrate a strong interest in working as part of a collaborative and cross-disciplinary team are required. You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in synthetic chemistry with a focus on DNA chemistry. You will have strong project and time management skills to ensure we achieve the project aims and deliver the required results. You will also be involved in general running and maintenance of the laboratory and the network and are expected to adhere to our strict safety standards.

This is a full time fixed term role to start from 05/01/2021 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and ending no later than 28/02/2025 due to funding restrictions.
