Job Details

Supervisory Team: Prof. Peter Roach

Project description

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is one of the most serious health threats globally and it is predicted that AMR bacteria will kill >10 million people by 2050. Recent advances in understanding antibiotic resistance mechanisms have suggested a potential therapeutic approach to overcome intrinsic antibiotic resistance. For this project, the successful candidate will combine biochemical, structural and microbiological studies, including characterisation of changes to the membranes of resistant bacteria, enzyme biochemistry, structural biology and inhibitor screening to better understand resistance mechanisms and to discover novel approaches to overcoming the threat of resistant bacteria.

The successful applicant will gain multidisciplinary expertise across the areas of chemical biology, biochemistry and microbiology, with opportunities for work placements in the collaborating laboratories at Public Health England and DSTL (both at Porton Down) respectively. For this project, we are seeking an enthusiastic graduate with at least a 2:1 degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related biological discipline. The studentship is open to UK Nationals.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Prof. Peter Roach, Chemical Biology, Therapeutics and Diagnostics group in Chemistry, Email: plr2@soton.ac.uk. Tel: +44 (0) 2380 595919
