The role

The Musculoskeletal Research Unit based within the University of Bristol Medical School, is focused on conducting research into musculoskeletal conditions. The Unit has a keen interest in improving the diagnosis of osteoporotic vertebral fractures.

We are looking for an experienced and skilled qualitative researcher to join our team, as part of a newly awarded National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) funded study. As the post holder you will be responsible for organising and conducting qualitative research with people who have experienced a vertebral fracture, alongside healthcare professionals and other stakeholders. The research aims to understand factors that may help or hinder the diagnosis of vertebral fractures. Information collected will be used to develop an educational resource for patients and/ or healthcare professionals to help identify these fractures more effectively in the future.

What will you be doing?
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team to design and deliver qualitative research in line with the aims of the study
  • Secure ethical and local approvals for the qualitative research
  • Organise, plan and conduct qualitative interviews with patients and GPs
  • Arrange and carry out a stakeholder group meeting using the nominal group technique to develop a series of recommendations
  • Plan and carry out two workshops to co-produce an educational resource with a range of stakeholders including professional educators
  • Organise and maintain storage of data in keeping with University policies and ensure that study records and outputs are effectively produced and maintained
  • Analyse qualitative data using established approaches including thematic analysis
  • Write and successfully publish articles in peer reviewed journals and contribute to the production of reports for the funder of the research


You should apply if
  • You have a PhD in a discipline relevant to qualitative research (examples include sociology,psychology,anthropology,health services research)
  • You have knowledge and experience of qualitative research in a heath context
  • You have experience of organising research visits and interviews, including contact with potential participants
  • You have knowledge and experience of a range of qualitative approaches to data collection and analysis
  • You have evidence of excellent writing skills, including first authorship of articles published in peer-reviewed journals
  • You have proven experience in applying for and securing NHS research ethics approval for qualitative research
  • You have knowledge of sound ethical practice in the conduct of research
  • You are self-motivated, proactive, innovative, and able to use initiative where appropriate
