Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?

Do you have a background in social care related research?

Do you want to further your career in one of the UK's leading research intensive Universities?

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Research Fellow to work on an exciting research study funded by National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Services & Delivery Research programme (ref: NIHR131016).

The Project: REcruiting and RetAining nurses, and carers in Care Homes: what works, for which staff, under what circumstances, and at what cost?

The REACH Realist Review

Registered nurses and care workers working in care homes are essential in supporting society's most frail and vulnerable older people. With the rising numbers

of older people there is an important need to consider how care homes will manage, and one key aspect is ensuring homes will have the staff needed to deliver care. Currently there are challenges in finding and keeping staff in care homes. Low pay is often stated as the main cause of this. Along with pay, evidence shows there are also other reasons influencing staff decisions to join or stay, such as, feeling valued at work, flexible hours, supportive management, good training, and team relationships. It is reasonable to expect that staff wants, needs, and expectations will vary across different staff roles (e.g. nurses, and care workers), age groups, and levels of experience/qualifications. Our research is focused on developing a clear understanding of what helps to successfully attract new staff, and keep current staff, and explain what will work for different staff groups, why, and the associated costs.

The project is led by Dr Reena Devi (principal investigator), and team members experienced and expert in care home and health and social care workforce research (Professor Karen Spilsbury, Professor Claire Goodman) realist review methods (Dr Sonia Dalkin) economic evaluation (Dr Angela Bate), designing and conducting evidence searches (Judith Wright), and social care policy (Liz Jones at the National Care Forum). Our team also includes members of the public with personal experience of care homes (Edna Feenan and Karen Winterburn).
