Full time starting salary is normally in the range £27,511 to £30,046, with potential progression once in post to £33,797.

Background

To assist in research (by carrying out data collection) to create knowledge through providing research support for the ABA-feed study.

The ABA-feed study (Assets-based infant feeding help Before and After Birth) builds on a previous feasibility study. It is a collaboration between five universities (Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Stirling and University of Central Lancashire) led by Birmingham with the trial managed by the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU). The intervention will be delivered by peer supporters trained to become infant feeding helpers and takes an asset-based approach.

The trial aims to recruit 2730 women expecting their first baby from 12-15 sites across the UK and randomise them to the ABA intervention or usual care. Alongside the trial we will undertake a mixed-methods process evaluation with more detailed case studies in five of the sites to explore the effect of context on implementation. This postholder will contribute to data collection in the West Midlands sites.

Main Duties
  • Recruit participants to the ABA-feed trial, including taking informed consent
  • Collect baseline research data; this will be through questionnaires
  • Work in collaboration with the trial co-ordinator at the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit
  • Contribute to problem solving around recruitment and data collection issues
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines through discussion with the trial co-ordinator, local research fellow and/or local lead
  • Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research

Person Specification
  • Degree or equivalent in relevant subject area, or relevant experience
  • Practical experience of applying the relevant skills and techniques
  • Ability to keep organised records, follow specified research processes and communicate effectively with potential research participants, midwives and staff in maternity services and other member of the research team
  • Ability to access and organise resources successfully
  • Able to travel to recruit participants, if required
