Job Details

The Biomedical Imaging Unit, one of UK's leading bioimaging facilities, provides a research and diagnostic microscopy service for the University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). This busy Unit is extremely well equipped with a range of imaging equipment including slide scanning, light sheet microscopy, confocal, X-ray computed tomography (CT), scanning and transmission electron microscopy, serial block face scanning electron microscopy and electron tomography allowing us to do correlative 2-, 3- and 4D imaging across the length scales.

Our imaging capability has been further strengthened following the installation of a BBSRC-funded MiLabs Optical-CT imaging system, capable of integrated, non-invasive, non-destructive imaging of tissue in live animals. Applications are invited for a reliable, outgoing and enthusiastic person to work in the BIU to support this new imaging service. The successful candidate will have a skill-mix which includes a specialist technical ability to operate the equipment and provide day-to-day maintenance; the ability to develop protocols, help users design and execute experiments and analyse resulting data and the ability to communicate the benefits and applications of the equipment to widen its research base. The post-holder must also be willing to handle live animals in an experimental situation and must hold or be prepared to apply for a Home Office Procedures Individual Licence (PIL) under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. A bit of background can be found here.

In addition, as part of this role you will assist in supporting the other biological X-ray CT work that is carried out in the BIU as well as participating in the research, training and outreach activities that that we are involved in.

Training for the post-holder will be provided in the different aspects of this post, according to the level of pre-existing experience and you will be encouraged and supported to obtain further qualifications to complement your career aspirations. This is a demanding and technically challenging post, but motivation and determination to drive forward this form of imaging is more important than having extensive experience in all of the above skills.

This is a great opportunity to gain or extend your experience in a rapidly developing form of imaging.

The post is available on a full time, fixed term basis until 27/01/2023, to be reviewed after 12 months. A DBS will be required for this role.

For informal enquiries please contact Anton Page, Head of the Biomedical Imaging Unit; 023 8079 4815, email: a.page@soton.ac.uk .

This post is full time but open to job share - please state on your application the hours you are available to work.

The Faculty of Medicine holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award demonstrating commitment to equal opportunities and gender balance in the workplace. The Faculty recognises that applicants may seek flexible working patterns which will be considered as part of the recruitment process. For further information including key benefits designed to help maintain and support employees' well-being and work-life balance, please see our working with us website pages.
