Job Details

Applications are invited for two Senior Research Fellow positions at the University of Southampton, full time fixed term until 01/08/2023. The fundamental challenge for the 21st century aircraft engineer is to stay on top of the complexity and size of the design problem. This has multiple facets. The solution to a design question (such as, what does the wing of a next generation transport aircraft look like) is constrained by regulations, performance requirements and environmental, sustainability and maintainability considerations. The resulting product itself is complex too, as driven by high demands on redundancy and functionality. Inevitably, design processes mirror this complexity and lose efficiency with increasing scale.

You willhelp us tackle this problem from two directions:

1) developing radically new, machine learning driven methods of defining parametric CAD geometry for aircraft and

2) capturing the rationale behind design decisions, whose efficient subsequent retrieval will aid product certification and re-design in a way that scales favourably with product complexity.

We are looking for an experienced design engineer (aerospace, mechanical or software) to work on a project aimed at accomplishing this. You will work as part of a vibrant computational engineering research group on the University's modern Boldrewood Innovation Campus, collaborating with researchers at two other universities, as well as with engineers from Airbus (our partners in the project).

Essential criteria for the role are: a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Aeronautical or Mechanical or Software Engineering, extensive experience in geometry modelling (including CAD) and extensive programming experience. Desirable attributes are: experience in Python programming, experience with multiple CAD tools (ideally including scripted geometry modelling), experience in design projects including design rationale capture, experience in an aerospace engineering context, experience in numerical analysis (e.g., CFD), and experience of teaching at undergraduate level and contributing at postgraduate level. Additionally, a strong track record of high-quality journal publications is an advantage.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
