Job Details

The role

The School of Biochemistry at the University of Bristol seeks two new full-time teaching focused lecturers to join our friendly and collegiate undergraduate teaching team. A willingness to teach students in both large and small group classes, along with a demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other academic and support staff and to work independently and organise one's own schedule will be essential.

What will you be doing?

The successful candidates will take on roles to support undergraduate teaching and will be expected to teach biochemistry both generally and within our main research areas . We are also looking to strengthen our teaching capacity in the area of biological chemistry.

Duties for both positions will include: leading face-to-face undergraduate practical classes, developing online learning resources, supervising undergraduate practical and literature projects, marking and moderating assessments, running small group tutorials for tutees in all four undergraduate year groups to support students' academic and personal progress, and contributing to the administration and oversight of teaching.

You should apply if

You can demonstrate high quality teaching and teaching innovation in biochemistry. A PhD in biochemistry or a related subject is essential, as is postdoctoral experience in research or education relevant to biochemistry. For one of the posts, the capacity to teach in the area of biological chemistry would be an advantage.

These posts are an exciting opportunity for high-calibre, enthusiastic individuals to work effectively in a cooperative and supportive environment where innovative approaches to teaching and learning are highly valued. A reflection of this, our recent NSS scores show 94% overall student satisfaction.

The School of Biochemistry is proud to hold an Advance HE Silver Athena Swan award and all of our research and teaching labs are 100% green lab (LEAF) accredited. We are committed to equal opportunities and to selection on merit and are constantly striving to create and sustain a diverse and inclusive culture. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities, particularly those from groups who are under-represented in STEM and we are happy to consider flexible working options.

Interviews are likely to take place on the 28th and 29th of January 2020 and will take place via an online platform such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams. The selection process will include a teaching presentation to members of the School as well as a panel style interview. Members of the selection panel will have undergone unconscious bias awareness prior to the interview. Further details will be provided to shortlisted candidates shortly after the closing date.

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
