Job Details

The role

A unique research opportunity is available at the Quantum Engineering Technology Labs (QET Labs) at the University of Bristol. This role will conduct R&D in integrated quantum photonics as part of the European Research Council funded project Photonics for engineered quantum enhanced measurement.

QET Labs is a cluster of quantum-related activities that spans research, training and enterprise. A major thrust of QET Labs across these activities is to deliver quantum technologies out of the lab and into the real world through application of engineering principles.

What will you be doing?

You will be a key part of the metrology and sensing team within QET Labs at Bristol, developing integrated quantum photonics for novel sensing and detection technologies while working with university researchers, fabrication collaborators, foundry suppliers and industrial partners. This innovative role will involve silicon photonic chip design and characterisation, low noise detector development, nonlinear quantum photonics and integration of electronics and photonics. The project seeks development of squeezed light generation, manipulation and detection on silicon photonic platforms.

You should apply if

You have Postgraduate (or equivalent) laboratory experience in one of experimental physics, optics, photonics, electronics, industry product development or a related discipline. An excellent first degree in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering, Physics, or other relevant discipline with relevant work/research experience. A PhD (or equivalent doctoral qualification) in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering, Physics, or other relevant discipline (or equivalent relevant research experience). Have significant experience of the design and implementation of complex optical systems and possess sufficient expertise in optical engineering to be able to adapt and optimise existing designs and methods for specific project tasks. Previous experience of working in teams specialising in technology development.

The successful applicant will work closely with Prof. Jonathan Matthews and their team as well as engaging and collaborating with other members across the Quantum Engineering Technology Labs and the Quantum information Institute, whose collective experience spans experiment and theory of quantum optics, photonics, foundations of quantum physics, quantum information theory and quantum technologies.

This position is presented as full-time. Flexible working options are considered. QET Labs is committed to helping researchers become independent academics and have extensive experience in aiding PDRAs with fellowship applications

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
