Job Details

The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the leading life sciences institutes in the world. It consists of 30 groups and 500 employees that research how molecules and cells create life, spanning the scale from atom to organism. Founded in 1971, the Biozentrum has been the birthplace of many fundamental discoveries in biology and medicine, spawning several Nobel Laureates.

A postdoc position is available in the group of Prof. Christoph Dehio ( www.biozentrum.unibas.ch/dehio ).

The advertised position is part of the National Center of Competence in Research AntiResist (2020-2032; https://nccr-antiresist.ch/ ). NCCR AntiResist is a Swiss-wide interdisciplinary center for antibiotic research with strong collaborations between biologists, clinicians, engineers, computational scientists and chemists. Our goals are to develop relevant laboratory models mimicking Brucella infection and the response to antibiotics in human patients, and to use these models to discover innovative strategies for combating human brucellosis. At the core of this venture are direct links between basic and clinical research and bioengineering.

Your position

To develop innovative approaches to isolate and analyze Brucella and Brucella-infected cells from human patient samples in order to better understand the pathogen-host interaction and associated cellular physiological processes on both the host and bacterial side. The gained knowledge will then be used for refining or developing new in-vitro infection models to better study Brucella-host interaction and the resilience to antibiotics.

Your profile

You obtained a PhD in immunology, cell biology, clinical microbiology, or a related field. You have a genuine interest in bacterial-host interaction and in method development. Experience in immunophenotyping and related FACS-based application as well as with analysis from large MS or RNA-seq dataset would be an asset. Willingness to work at Biosafety Level 3 for follow-up experiments would also be a great advantage.

We offer you

Our multidisciplinary group includes microbiologists and cell biologist with an expertise in bacterial pathogenesis of zoonosis with chronic manifestations (a list of recent publications can be found here ). We have an excellent support from various core facilities with expert staff as well as a very strong multi-disciplinary collaborative environment within the frame of the NCCR AntiResist project.

The position will start in January 2021 or upon agreement and the funding is available for at least three years.

Basel is an international city with people from 150 nations. Located on the border where three countries meet - Switzerland-Germany- France -, it is Europe's most important life sciences hub. Basel provides a high standard of living and a rich and varied cultural atmosphere.
