The role

As the successful applicant you will work in the recently established paediatric and adult sports & exercise cardiology research group at the University of Bristol and in close collaboration with the South-West Superregional Centre for Congenital Heart Disease, Bristol Heart Institute, the Children's Health & Exercise Research Centre (CHERC)/ University of Exeter, the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH) at University College London and Canon Medical Systems Ltd. You will join a research programme developing and using new cardiac imaging techniques (US, MRI) and protocols to quantitatively assess cardiac function during exercise in healthy children and adults, child and adult athletes and patients with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD).

What will you be doing?

As the successful applicant you will be responsible for further developing and running the exercise and sports cardiology research programme. This will involve organising and working in a team of cardiologists, exercise physiologists and basic scientists under mentorship of the senior investigators and line managers. At the same time be involved in some of our different cardiac and surgical clinical projects within the new British Heart Foundation chair in congenital and structural heart surgery, in the area of exercise and clinical outcome research. Under the guidance of the line managers they will be encouraged to use their own initiative, analysing and interpreting their research data and findings and also expecting to propose new project and grant applications. As the successful candidate you will be expected to have a tangible research interest including extensive research outputs including publications in international peer reviewed journals, communications at international conferences, and expertise in statistical methodologies. An interest in developing new diagnostic methodologies in congenital and sports cardiology is desirable. Work will also include performing and interpreting ECGs and after sufficient training, also Echocardiograms. The requested level of seniority will ensure that you will be able to work independently and have the experience to create a safe working environment, facilitating high quality translational research and provide training and guidance for more junior members of staff.

You should apply if
  • You have a PhD in a related area of research and have advanced knowledge in exercise and cardiac physiology, diagnostic tests, equipment use and methodologies in exercise science and cardiology, specifically sports cardiology
  • You have ECG skills to the point of performing and interpreting adult, paediatric and athlete ECGs
  • You have advance database management and knowledge in the interpretation, governance, and management of patient data, including security
  • You have a good understanding of cardiac imaging technologies
  • You are competent with Microsoft Word & Excel and statistic software
  • You can manage competing demands and priorities, sometimes to tight deadlines
  • You show good analytical skills and the ability to implement solutions proactively and creatively to complex problems
  • You enjoy and can learn new techniques, identify technical problems and - in collaboration with the project's PIs and collaborators - discuss and work out solutions
  • You have a publication record in the areas of exercise and sports cardiology
