The role
We are looking for assistant teachers to join a teaching team for an interdisciplinary first level unit called Understanding Global Problems Using Data. This unit is open to students from a wide range of disciplines so it is very interdisciplinary and diverse. The subject matter of the unit is basic data analysis on topics such as climate change, the COVID pandemic and inequality. The aims of the course are to teach essential data analysis skills through Excel and skills of communicating results effectively to non-specialist audiences.
What will you be doing?
The role involves teaching weekly workshops in the unit jointly with other staff. The teaching on this unit is all online. It will involve preparing explanatory Excel spreadsheets for students to follow step-by-step, participating in the sessions and answering student questions in the chat facility, running office hours and other online help sessions and marking a proportion of the two assessments on this course (which are a report and a video).
You should apply if
You have a good knowledge of Excel, particularly its use in simple statistical analysis, for example calculating means, correlations and creating various types of charts. You should have an interest in global issues such as climate change and inequality. Very few students on the unit will have any familiarity with data analysis so you will need excellent explanatory skills and be able to teach students with varied exposure to data methods. Note that mathematical knowledge or expertise is not needed for this role, but data skills are essential.
We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
