Job Details

Are you an experienced software engineer with a background in the specification, design, and implementation of multi-platform, distributed, real-time software solutions?

Do you have experience in the operational management of an agile production or research facility?

Are you interested in contributing to pioneering research and development of the UK's leading human-in-the-loop simulation methodologies?

The University of Leeds' Virtuocity suite is a world-leading research facility with a 25 years+ track record in research and innovation, using a suite of immersive, human-in-the-loop, simulation facilities (car, truck, pedestrian, bicycle) and supported by in-house software development. Managed by members of the Human Factors and Safety Research Group at ITS, who investigate user interaction with new and forthcoming transport technologies, the facilities are used to address key societal questions in surface transport, such as human interaction with automated vehicles, the effect of user impairments on road safety and behavioural aspects of vehicle emissions.

The Virtuocity Facilities Manager and Simulator Software Architect takes the lead role in actively contributing to key innovations in new research tools in this context, leading on developments of the simulation software architecture, to ensure that our research simulators deliver key knowledge in this rapidly developing area and contributing to the group's longer-term strategic objectives.

The Virtuocity Suite facilities are supported by European and UK government grants, bilateral industry-funded projects, and PhD positions, addressing the research interests of internal and external collaborators. The post holder will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of the delivery of this service, assisting with the development of experimental designs, and liaising between the simulator software development team, the academic PIs, and external sponsors.

Globally, simulator software architectures are evolving rapidly to make the best use of new experimental approaches and sophisticated hardware. We expect you to take the lead in continuing the evolution of our software base, to meet ongoing research challenges and to maintain our world-leading position in this field. You will be given a unique opportunity to maintain and further develop our high-level software architecture, whilst also ensuring backwards compatibility with existing experimental scenarios. Depending on your background and career interests, pursuit of funding for research is also encouraged and supported.
