Director of Liver Transplantation

Primary Liver Transplant Surgeon

The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) is seeking a full-time faculty member in the Department of Surgery to become Director of a new liver transplant program at The George Washington University Transplant Institute. The MFA is an independent, non-profit clinical practice group affiliated with the George Washington University and our kidney transplant program is nationally recognized and rapidly expanding. The Department of Surgery’s faculty are committed to patient care; cohesive and focused team building; administrative leadership; resident, fellow, and medical student education; and scholarly activities that advance clinical medicine.

The Director will have the responsibility of working with The George Washington University Hospital and the George Washington University Transplant Institute to build a preeminent liver transplant program. The Director will establish policies for the proper pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative care of liver transplant patients. Applicants possessing a strong background in abdominal organ transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery, as well as exemplifying excellent communicative and leadership skills are invited to apply as well as applicants who are eager to build and lead a multi-disciplinary team to establish a leading transplant program in the country. This position is non-tenure track and will be made at a rank (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) commensurate with experience. It will be located at our main campus in Foggy Bottom, Washington DC.  

Basic qualifications: Applicants must be currently certified by the American Board of Surgery and eligible for a DC Medical License at the time of appointment. Applicants must have completed accredited fellowship training in liver transplant surgery; and demonstrated satisfactory liver transplant experience as documented by clinical expertise; peer references; excellence in teaching as evidenced by teaching evaluations; excellence in research as evidenced by scholarly publications or works in progress; and excellence in clinical care as evidenced by experience, fellowships, and references. Applicants must also be currently involved in and have performed at least 60 liver transplants and 30 liver procurements as primary surgeon over the most recent 5-year period and maintained a working knowledge of all facets of liver transplant patient care.
