Specific Responsibilities:

A summer research internship is available in the Biologics Analytical Operations Department at the Oceanside, CA, campus of Gilead Sciences. The candidate should be enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate Program with a Major in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Pharmacology, Bioinformatics or a related discipline.

Essential Functions:

Under general supervision, the candidate will develop scripts in R or Python toward targeted automation of select portions of common chromatography, electrophoresis, and mass spectrometry data processing workflows and statistical analyses in biologics analytical development. The candidate will also develop scripts for common bioinformatic calculations. The candidate will gain exposure to biopharmaceutical research and development from the perspective of a protein analytical chemist.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Undergraduate or graduate student in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Pharmacology, Bioinformatics or a related field enrolled at a 4-year accredited university/college; including enrollment in the Fall Semester after completing the internship
  • Good verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills are required
  • Ability to complete 10-12 consecutive weeks between May and September
  • Knowledge of protein and carbohydrate structure, function, and synthesis
  • Experience with mass spectrometry of proteins or carbohydrates would be beneficial, but is not required
  • Experience handling mid-sized to large data sets in R (data.frame) or Python (Pandas, Numpy, etc.)
  • Experience with text processing in R or Python
  • The ideal candidate should enjoy identifying key insights by building thorough understanding of midsize to large dataset (thousands to tens of thousands of entries) and have an interest in protein structural chemistry
  • Independent, self-starter who is interested in gaining exposure to biologics analytical development

This position will be remote, reporting into the Oceanside, CA office on Pacific Standard Time
