Scientific Editor, The Journal of Pathology and The Journal of Pathology: Clinical Research

Further particulars

Role specification

The Journal Pathology was founded in 1892 and is the leading journal in its field, with an Impact Factor of 6.021 (2019). The Journal of Pathology: Clinical Research is its Open Access companion journal, published since 2015, with a first Impact Factor of 3.489 (2019).  The post of Scientific Editor has been created in response to the increasingly complex nature, and volume, of the material submitted to the Journals. This provides an excellent opportunity for a research scientist with post-Doctoral experience to bring research skills to a fresh challenge in publishing. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop their editorial skills and strengthen both Journals by working with the editorial teams, which currently comprise:

The Journal of Pathology

Editor in Chief – C Simon Herrington

Senior Scientific Editor – Richard Poulsom

Senior and Reviews Editor – Philip Coates

Associate Editors – Ming Du, Will Foulkes, Stephen Fox, David Huntsman, Rachael Natrajan, Nischalan Pillay, Louise van der Weyden, Laura Wood

The Journal of Pathology: Clinical Research

Editor in Chief – C Simon Herrington

Senior Scientific Editor – Richard Poulsom

Associate Editors – Ricardo Lastra, Tilman Rau, Lysandra Voltaggio, Joanne Edwards

The main components of the role are:

  1. to assist the Senior Scientific Editor in managing the editorial functions of the Journals, in conjunction with the Editor in Chief
  2. to solicit the submission of high-quality contributions to the Journals and to invite authors to write review articles, perspectives and commentaries; to co-supervise the commissioning and peer-review of the Annual Review Issues and ensure that they are published to schedule
  3. to provide cover for the senior editorial team by mutual agreement; and to be prepared to act as final decision-maker on any papers for which the Editor-in-Chief is an author
  4. to evaluate submitted contributions in accordance with editorial policy in liaison with the editorial team, and select contributions suitable for external peer review
  5. to arrange for and supervise the independent peer review of contributions
  6. to comply with editorial policy and all procedures and standards for the acceptance of manuscripts, and contribute to editing of accepted articles
  7. to meet and confer with the Publisher’s personnel at such times as the Publisher and the Society reasonably request (usually online, sometimes in person)
  8. to use an editorial office system, currently ScholarOne Manuscripts™, for the receipt of submissions and management of the review process, in liaison with the Editorial Office, the Editor-in-Chief and Editors. This requires significant periods working on-screen and online
  9. to attend such conferences as are deemed appropriate by, and agreed in advance with, the Society and the Publisher, to assist in the promotion of the Journals. Travel and expenses will be paid from an expense budget agreed between the Society and the Publisher.
