This position is accountable for developing and delivering chemical engineering process technology in support of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) manufacturing at Pfizer's Kalamazoo (Michigan) plant. This position will focus on the fermentation and downstream processing, including production troubleshooting, support, and improvement. The incumbent will serve as a primary technical expert for manufacturing processes, will perform and direct laboratory studies, and will support the introduction of new processes into the facility. The incumbent will work closely with the fermentation and isolation plants to review procedures/process performance and to solve process problems while providing technical knowledge, expertise, and evaluation for other support functions.


Work effectively in a fast-paced, customer-oriented, laboratory environment to develop and deliver process technology in support of commercial fermentation and downstream operations.

Develop, implement, and improve robust commercial processes to make API and intermediates.

Work under general supervision, recommend actions, participate in setting objectives of projects, and independently determine and develop experimental programs.

Maintain laboratory area and equipment in a clean, safe, functional order.


BS, MS, or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering. A minimum of 3 years of laboratory/manufacturing experience is required for BS/MS candidates. Preference is given to applicants with previous experience in a research laboratory setting, a strong background of traditional bioprocessing (fermentation, bioconversion, downstream purification, etc.), and/or a working knowledge of cGMP/statistical methods.


Primary interactions will be within the Kalamazoo manufacturing site, particularly with colleagues in the following groups: Process and Process Technology (PPT) scientists/technicians in the Chemistry, Engineering, and DPMT sections; API/DP manufacturing group leaders, plant professionals, and operators; PfizerCentreOne sales group; Quality operations; Regulatory; Compendial affairs; Business technology; and Engineering/Maintenance.


The position does not have any direct reports. It does, however, involve working in a team environment, which may include directing or mentoring junior colleagues or technicians.


This position involves working in a laboratory/production environment, which may include standing for long periods of time and working with a variety of chemical/biological materials. A strong foundation in chemical engineering unit operations is essential for this job.


The position may require colleagues to work off-hours, weekends, and/or holidays as needed to meet business or customer needs.
