We have the following exciting opportunity in our Washington, DC location (flexible).

Executive Director - Community/Patient Advocacy Lead

Reporting to the Vice President of Public Affairs, this role will lead patient/community advocacy initiatives for Gilead's product and pipeline programs, with a specific emphasis in the area of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis and Oncology.

Position Description

Responsibilities Include:

  • Directs the enterprise-wide strategy, planning and implementation of patient advocacy outreach and partnerships with a focus in the areas of HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and Oncology access to care, treatment and prevention
  • Develops and implements specific plans that engage new patient voices, representative of today's HIV epidemic, with the shared goal of enhancing awareness of the disease and access to Gilead's innovative medicines
  • Identifies programs and opportunities for advocacy in the area of Hepatitis B and D and Oncology
  • Leads the development of relationships with a wide variety of community advocates, organizations and professionals
  • Maintains two-way dialogue with patient/community advocacy groups to understand priorities and opportunities for collaboration and support, and shares information on Gilead and our position on key issues
  • Collaborates and regularly participates as a member of cross-functional teams, representing external communications function; provides recommendations to help achieve company goals
  • Represents the voice of patient advocacy communities in internal planning
  • Together with Commercial and Medical Affairs, engages advocacy groups in listening sessions and advisory boards to gather insights to inform our decision-making
  • Together with Government Affairs and Policy and other internal teams, develops plans to communicate policy positions on issues such as disease prevention and access to care globally, including in less developed countries around the world

    Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience in patient advocacy and issues management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulations and principles specific to a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company
  • Experience managing multiple projects (timelines, budgets, priorities) simultaneously; flexibility is essential
  • Excellent strategic thinker with ability to formulate, develop and execute on agreed strategies
  • Strong executive presence with ability to command respect with both external and internal stakeholders
  • Successful collaboration within cross-functional teams
  • Requires a BA degree in communications, liberal arts, business or science-oriented field and minimum 16+ years of relevant experience; advanced degree in social work or related healthcare field preferred
  • Knowledge of Gilead's area of therapeutic focus, specifically HIV/AIDS, is required
