Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £27,511 to £30,046, with potential progression once in post to £33,797.

Background

To support and conduct research as part of a new NIHR-funded Programme Grant ('Achieving closure?' Improving outcomes when care homes close) by undertaking a specified range of activities within a specific programme of research.

Summary of Role

• Work as part of a team to deliver the funded research programme
• Collect, analyse and interpret research data
• Contribute to the dissemination of academic and policy/practice outputs
• Contribute to the impact of the research on services and on people's lives

Main Duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

• To review, under supervision, and critically appraise the relevant economic literature
• To help identify and collect appropriate resource utilisation data for the primary care home costing studies and critique and assess appropriate costs
• To assist in the extraction of relevant data from the published economic evaluations and other economic literature. Such data is likely to include costs, outcomes, assumptions and other parameters used to carry out the published study
• Under supervision, to synthesise relevant extracted data for comparison across studies and for use in developing an appropriate economic evaluation based on all the existing and relevant data
• To assist in the development of an appropriate decision analytic model and assist in carrying out appropriate analyses to help accurately interpret the result
• To support the writing of reports and papers for publication
• To assist in the carrying out of economic evaluations as appropriate for each sub-topic within the post
• To attend relevant project meetings with colleagues
• To support the dissemination of research findings using appropriate and effective media, including publications in leading journals, presentation at conferences and meetings
• To support colleagues in presenting research outputs, including assistance in drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
• To give support to Unit/Institute research-related activities and administration
• To a limited degree, to support the HEU teaching programme, particularly in relation to the Masters programme in Health Economics and Health Policy/Econometrics
• To support any other appropriate activities that will help to achieve the objectives of the Health Economics Unit
• To contribute to the life of the University by participating in other appropriate activities including seminar attendance
• Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research

Person Specification

Skilled in quantitative methods for Health Economic Analysis

• A Masters degree in Health Economics or a related subject and/or professional success and achievement
• Sufficient knowledge of health economics and/or research methods and techniques to work within each specified project
• Familiarity with relevant software
• Very good communication skills and confidence to deal with a variety of senior researchers, particularly good writing skills
• Ability to work to fixed deadlines
• Ability to work as a member of a team
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly
• Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
