Background
The Inflammatory Steroid Metabolism Research Group, led by Dr Hardy, examines the roles of steroid metabolism and signalling in the pathophysiology of chronic inflammatory diseases. Dr Hardy's research group links the institutes of Clinical Sciences, Metabolism and Systems Research and Inflammation and Aging at the University of Birmingham to deliver inter-disciplinary and fully translational research environment.
Job Summary
This new MRC funded position, under the direction of Dr Rowan Hardy, Dr Richard Moakes, Professors Liam Grover and Professor Karim Raza aims to develop novel intra-articular steroids for the treatment of chronic polyarthritis. The post holder will lead the laboratory research development of effective drug delivery platforms that will be tested in human primary cultures and preclinical models of disease. The candidate will be expected to perform laboratory protocols synthesising and optimising intra-articular steroid injection formulations, perform preclinical testing in murine models as well as collating and analysing data, presenting research outputs, contributing to publications and providing general technical support. The post holder will be based within the Institute of Biomedical Research at the University of Birmingham and will be part of an established and productive research team.

Main Duties
- To conduct research and collect research data under the direction of the principle investigator
- To support with scoring and testing of steroids formulations in murine preclinical models of polyarthritis
- To analyse research data as requested, and present research outputs, including drafting academic publications.
- Develop and adapt techniques, models and methods and use techniques including cell culture, ELISA and Immunohistochemistry
- General Administration and Organization
- Maintain stocks of consumables, creating purchase order requisitions via web based ordering system
- Receipt and correct storage of consumables and chemical reagents.
- Any other duties commensurate with the grade and skill base of the role holder.
- Ensuring areas of responsibility comply with all basic University / College Health & Safety policies
- Reporting any breaches or non-compliance with H&S procedures to the PI, Technical Manager or Lab Manager
Person Specification
- A BSc or MSc in a Biosciences related subject
- Proven laboratory experience in Microbiology, Molecular Biology and practical knowledge of technical and scientific methods stated
- Substantial practical and technical experience of applying relevant skills and techniques such as cell culture, ELISAs Immunohistochemistry and histology (essential)
- Collect research data through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, research interviews and publications
- Ability to organise and manage own work load and demonstrate flexibility in terms of work practices/requirements
- Proven ability to work independently but function as part of a team
- Proven ability to diagnose/ resolve problems and suggest solutions in own area, whilst having regard to the local and wider interests
- Must be able to communicate effectively at all levels
- Knowledge of current relevant H&S policies
- Proficiency in commonly used software packages
